Story
The BCCI has revised the deadline for Indian Premier League franchises to confirm their player retentions and releases ahead of the IPL 2027 auction. Teams have been granted an additional two days, with the final submission date now set for November 17 instead of November 15.
The original deadline coincided with the fifth One-Day International between India and New Zealand. With the revised schedule, franchises will have slightly more time to evaluate their squads and make decisions before the upcoming auction.
The IPL 2027 mini-auction is scheduled for December 16 in Goa and will be conducted over a single day.
IPL 2027 Auction Registration and Important Deadlines
Once franchises submit their retention and release lists, the IPL will begin the next stage of the auction preparation process.
Teams will receive a list of registered players from which they can identify potential targets. Based on the franchises' selections, the IPL will prepare the final auction pool and organise players into sets for bidding.
The registration window for players will close on November 23, six days after the revised retention deadline.
Franchises will also have until November 27 to request the inclusion of additional players. The final list of eligible players, along with the auction sets and their order, is scheduled to be distributed to teams on December 3.

IPL 2027 Season Dates Yet to Be Confirmed
Although the auction schedule has been outlined, the BCCI has not yet announced the official starting and finishing dates for IPL 2027.
In 2024, the board had shared tentative windows for three upcoming IPL seasons. Under that plan, the 2027 edition was expected to take place between March 14 and May 30.
However, following the BCCI's Annual General Meeting in September 2026, board secretary Devajit Saikia indicated that the competition might begin closer to the end of March.
The possibility of a later start means franchises and supporters will need to wait for the final tournament calendar.
The BCCI is expected to provide further clarity on the season schedule separately from the auction process.
Final Mini-Auction Before IPL 2028 Mega Auction
The December 2026 auction will be particularly significant because it is the final mini-auction under the IPL's existing auction cycle.
A mega auction is scheduled ahead of the 2028 season, when franchises will enter a new phase of squad planning.
Unlike mini-auctions, which generally allow teams to make targeted additions and replace released players, mega auctions involve a much broader restructuring of squads under the retention rules applicable to that cycle.
This makes the IPL 2027 auction an important opportunity for franchises looking to address immediate weaknesses while remaining competitive during the final season of the current cycle.
Teams will need to balance short-term requirements with the knowledge that another major auction is approaching.
IPL 2028 to Begin a New Media Rights Cycle
The planned 2028 mega auction will also coincide with the beginning of the IPL's next media rights cycle.
The BCCI has not yet issued the tender for the upcoming rights period, but the next agreement is expected to attract considerable attention given the IPL's commercial importance.
The league established itself among the world's most valuable sporting competitions when its media rights were sold in 2022 for INR 48,390.5 crore, approximately US$6.2 billion at the time.
That agreement highlighted the IPL's growing commercial strength and its position as one of the leading properties in international sports broadcasting.
The next media rights cycle will therefore be another significant development for the tournament, alongside the 2028 mega auction.
Franchises Turn Their Attention to Squad Planning
With the revised November 17 deadline approaching, IPL franchises must finalise which players they intend to retain and which will be released into the auction pool.
These decisions will directly influence each team's available budget, squad composition and strategy for the December auction.
Once the retention lists are confirmed, attention will shift towards the registered players and the potential bidding battles between franchises.
The December 16 mini-auction in Goa will give teams their final opportunity to make auction-based adjustments under the current cycle before the larger squad reshuffle planned for IPL 2028.
For now, the immediate focus remains on the retention announcements, which will provide the first major indication of how franchises are preparing for the 2027 season.
